Excellence Project

Introduction to the S.I.-N-T-E-S.I. Project

The Department of Experimental Medicine (DMS) is proud to present its new Excellence Project: S.I.-N-T-E-S.I. The acronym encapsulates our mission and scientific vision: Systems Integrated in Neuroendocrine and Endocrine Metabolic and Neoplastic Hormone Sensitive Diseases: hub of Investigational, Transdisciplinary, Experimental, Preclinical and Translational Medicine ("SIstemi Integrati nelle Malattie ENdocrino MeTaboliche e NEoplastiche Ormono Sensibili: hub di medicIna sperimentale, transdisciplinare, preclinica e traslazionale").

An Integrated Research Ecosystem

The success of our development plan is based on the systematic integration of all DMS resources: from leading clinical laboratory referral centers to clinical trials, from highly qualified personnel to state of the art research laboratories. This synergy creates a fundamental “physical and cultural hinge” that links three crucial areas of development:

  1. Clinical research

  2. Preclinical and diagnostic research

  3. Non health, trans disciplinary research

The Development Plan in a Nutshell: Strategies, Domains, and Actions

In line with our development strategies for the project, the S.I.-N T E S.I. plan is structured around two main macro domains and five specific actions designed to radically transform our research approach:

  • Macro-domain I: Enable a qualitative leap in the type of clinical experimentation

    • Action 1 – Phase 1 Clinical Trial Facility

    • Action 2 – Multiomic transition for the “host reaction”

    • Action 5 – Integrated diagnostic big data in “network medicine”

  • Macro-domain II: Accelerate the translational impact of cutting edge research

    • Action 3 – Facility for organoids and 4D microphysiological systems

    • Action 4 – Cell Factory for cellular therapies

SINTESI in University Excellence

The project goes beyond the Department’s growth and integrates organically into our University’s strategic plan (Sapienza Università di Roma). SINTESI addresses specific strategic areas (SWOT) of the Ateneo, aiming to:

  • Requalify spaces to foster innovative, multidisciplinary research.

  • Maximize the potential of the University Teaching Hospitals.

  • Actively mitigate weaknesses related to gender and age gaps.

  • Counteract threats stemming from shrinking public funding by increasing receptivity to commissioned clinical trials.

  • Enhance the attractiveness of the entire research ecosystem through the applied value of our development plan.

The “Patient Centered” Approach

At the heart of the S.I.-N T E S.I. Project stands the patient. Our operational model integrates research on endocrine metabolic diseases, rare diseases, and immuno oncology (with a focus on hormone sensitive tumors) through innovative, cross cutting approaches. From genomics to artificial intelligence, from regenerative medicine to drug repurposing, every effort is oriented toward delivering innovative, personalized therapies.
