About us

The Department of Experimental Medicine (DMS) was founded in 2010 from the merger of two historic Institutes: "Experimental Medicine and Pathology" and "Medical Pathophysiology", integrating expertise in endocrine-metabolic pathophysiology, immunology, experimental oncology, tissue regeneration, and precision medicine. Over the years, it has consolidated a highly translational research model, based on the integration between laboratory and clinic across the nine disciplinary areas that characterize it (Meds-01/A, Meds-02/A, Meds-02/B, Meds-08/A, Meds-08/C, Meds-09/A, Meds-26/A, Meds-26/D, Bios-09/A).

The mission of the DMS is to understand biological mechanisms and their complex interactions, serving as a guide for personalized medicine oriented toward well-being.

In 2023, the DMS was recognized as a Department of Excellence with the SINTESI project, ranking second nationally in the medical area. The project strengthens its identity as a transdisciplinary translational hub, operating as a true bridge between pre-clinical research, diagnostics, and advanced therapy, capable of rapidly transforming discoveries into concrete benefits for patients and the community.

To achieve its mission, the DMS develops its own strategic development plan, which is updated over the years, and which has allowed it to reach increasingly ambitious goals over time. The tools adopted by the DMS include promoting merit in research, innovative teaching, internationalization, and the third mission. It adopts a participatory and planned organizational model that offers everyone the opportunity to contribute to the departmental mission.

The Department defines and applies transparent and verifiable criteria for the distribution of resources (human, financial, and infrastructural), consistent with its strategic objectives. Among the aspects the DMS considers a priority are the support of young researchers, the advancement of academic careers, and the promotion of an inclusive environment attentive to equal opportunities.

Looking to the future and the sustainability of internationally competitive research, the DMS invests decisively in the development of advanced technological infrastructures, in the synergy between groups, and in the participation of its researchers in national and international scientific networks.
